THE KITCHEN

Next to our love of Gardening is our love of the Kitchen and the food that goes with it.

Once again we are in NO WAY professionals in fact far from it but we really enjoy experimenting and although we have had more failures, then successors we find time in the kitchen is something we both enjoy all be it when we are in there together the competition is fierce.

Having spent a number of very enjoyable years in Indonesia and having, met some very good friends there, as well as the Philippines, Thailand and China a lot of the food we cook is of Asian origin and we thank our friends for passing on some of their family recipes.

We would like to share some of these dishes, and others that we have thrown together with you.

If any of these dishes reflect any of the professionals recipes from cook books or the like we apologies, and we state categorically that they are what we have put together, or have been passed on to us by our past Pembantu’s or friends.
Pembantu is Indonesian for maid, when working in Indonesia you are expected to hire nationals. This helps provide employment for the population.

During our time in Indonesia we had three different Pembantu’s and all three were exceptional cooks and lovely people

We like Hot Spicy food so please where we indicate chillies (we have tried to tone it down) please put in what you feel suits you.
In fact we find it difficult to provide actual amounts of ingredients as we cook to taste.

We urge you to do the same as everyone’s taste vary and by sticking to what someone else is suggesting might mean you miss out on the full potential of the dish.

The other thing we suggest is if you have a partner get in the kitchen together and if you have children as well get them all involved it really can be great fun and the gastronomic delights you create taste even better when you know you have created them together.

Yours meals will taste so much better if you have your own Herb Garden. Herbs are easy to grow and you don’t need a lot of room.

The garden is another activity which is much more enjoyable if the whole family is involved and there is nothing more pleasurable then moving through the herbs collecting those that you require for the culinary work of art you are about to create.

The herbs we use the most are:
• Chillies
• Ginger
• Garlic
• Parsley
• Coriander
• Dill
• Rosemary
• Sweet Basil
• Sage
• Turmeric
• Galangal
• Chives
• Mint
• Lemon Grass
