THE
LEESHACK GARDEN
Ask people what a garden means to them and you get a never ending variety of answers. To Diane and myself a garden is something that we can’t live without. We have had the good fortune to have
travelled and worked off shore and no matter where we go gardens are always a big part of our lives.
We have developed gardens in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Perth and from the Gascoyne to the Pilbarra in the North West of W.A. The gardens and the wild life that is drawn to it is something we love and cherish. We have enjoyed all our gardens and although we are in no way horticulturists, landscapers or professional in any way we consider the gardens we have created over the years have to us, been very successful, very rewarding and most importantly given us a place to relax and enjoy nature. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the results of good old fashion hard work and then sitting back and watching nature take over to complete the magic.
We have for many years talked about developing a garden that would cover many acres and include a variety of themes, cultures and be interesting enough for people to visit and share the experience.
We finally agreed we would give it a go and we purchased a property in the breathtaking beautiful Porongurup Rangers.
The 22 hectare property nestles on the southern side of the Rangers with the Porongurup National Park behind and views all the way into Albany and Mt Many Peaks in front.
With a creek flowing through the centre of the property the location is perfect for an Olive Grove and Garden.
The work commenced in June 1998 with the planting of our first Olive Trees. Two species were planted a Tuscany
variety and a Spanish variety. Due to us working overseas no further work was undertaken on the garden until 2002 at which time our son Marc moved back to WA from Melbourne to manage the Grove. Additional tree planting took place in 2002 and 2003 which added another five species mainly Tuscany varieties.
Two hundred roses were planted in May 2003 species include Just Joey, Mr. Lincoln, Blue Moon, and Black Velvet.
This was followed with the planting of one
hundred and thirty cabernet sauvignon grape plants and a variety of fruit trees.
The next stages will include the installation of the formal fountain, the planting of another one thousand olive trees, 200 roses, fifteen hundred Lavender Plants and some four hundred geranium plants.
We have a long long way to go so please stay with us, follow the progress and hopefully one day you will be able to visit the Leeshack Gardens.
